About
About Graphite.
A notebook for people who study something to make something of it — an article, a video, a talk. What it holds to, what it does with your work, and where it is today.
Who it's for
For people who learn to make something.
Graphite is for someone who studies a topic to make something of it: an article, a video, a talk. It's a notebook in three steps — write it down, work it out, make something of it — with Graphite beside each note to ask what you haven't worked out yet, check you can explain it, and arrange a draft from your own sentences.
It isn't built for a team's shared wiki or for a task list, and if what you want is an answer you don't mean to learn, a chat window is quicker.
It isn't related to the other products named Graphite, such as the code review tool at graphite.com.
What it holds to
Three principles, each said only as far as its research goes.
Your words stay yours.
Graphite changes nothing you write unless you accept the change, and marks what it writes as its own. A draft it arranges holds only your sentences; an article it writes is a new note, and yours stays as it was.
The best way to learn is to teach.
Explain it to someone who asks why, with your notes closed, and you'll find what you don't understand yet.
Connect the dots.
Saying how a new idea connects to what you already know, in your own words, helps you understand it.
Your work
Files you keep, and the AI you choose.
In the Mac app, every note is a markdown file on your Mac, to open in Obsidian, in any editor or in Finder; in a browser, the notes stay in that browser, and Keep a copy saves them as files. Delete the app and you keep everything, exactly as it was.
Works with Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, Mistral, DeepSeek and more — paste a key, or sign in with OpenRouter. Graphite never charges for the AI on your own key. Your key goes only to the provider you chose, and you pay that provider for what you use, at their prices.
A Claude or Gemini subscription can't be used by other apps — Anthropic doesn't allow it, and Google offers no way to — so for those you'd use an API key, or OpenRouter. Signing in with ChatGPT needs OpenAI's approval, which we've asked for.
Your notes are files on your Mac, or kept by your browser, and Graphite keeps no copy of them. Graphite sends a note to your AI provider only when you ask, and the line under each box says what it sends. Filing your Inbox and reading receipts are off until you turn them on.
What it isn't
What it won't do.
It won't change your words.
Your notes keep your words. Graphite asks what's missing and checks you can explain it; a draft it arranges holds only your own sentences, and a change it suggests is yours to accept or reject. An explanation or an article Graphite writes for you is a note of its own, labelled as Graphite's, for you to check.
It won't give you a score.
No score, streak or badge. When you teach something back, Graphite marks what you explained against your own notes, never with a score.
It won't file anything until you ask.
It files your Inbox only once you turn on File my Inbox, and each note it files is a line in the Logbook, with Undo. A change it suggests to a note is yours to accept or reject.
Who writes here
The articles and guides are Graphite's own.
The articles in the Marketplace and the guides are signed Graphite, and published by the people who make it. Each says the day it was published and, when it has changed since, the day it last changed what it says; every guide cites at least one source on the web.
Where it is
In beta, in your browser and on the Mac.
The Mac app runs on macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon. On an Intel Mac, Windows or Linux, use Graphite in your browser.
In a browser — on a computer, a tablet or a phone — your notes stay in that browser on that device. Export a copy to keep them; they don't sync with your Mac.
Free with your own AI key. Two plans are coming: Plus, $4.99 a month, or $39.99 a year (4 months free), to publish your notes to the web, and Pro, $19.99 a month, or $159.99 a year (4 months free), with Graphite's AI. Your notes never lock.
What changed in each release, and on which, is in the release notes.
