Download Graphite
The desktop app keeps your notes as markdown files in a folder on your Mac. It’s a beta, and Apple hasn’t notarised it yet — the first launch takes one extra step.
Apple silicon · macOS 13 or later
Your notes stay in this browser on this device. Export a copy to keep them; they don’t sync with your Mac.
Opening it the first time
- 01
Move Graphite to Applications
Open the downloaded file and drag Graphite into your Applications folder.
- 02
Allow it in Privacy & Security
Because Apple hasn’t notarised the beta yet, the first time you open it macOS says it can’t check it for malicious software, and doesn’t open it. Close that message, open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down to Security, and choose Open Anyway beside the line about Graphite. Confirm with your password. After that it opens normally.
If there’s no Open Anyway, paste this into Terminal, then open Graphite again:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Graphite.app - 03
Add your AI key
Open Settings with ⌘, and paste in a key, or sign in with OpenRouter. Without one, everything except the Guide works. No key yet? How to get an AI API key for Graphite says where to make one.
What you need
- A Mac
- macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon.
- An AI key
- For the Guide: filing the Inbox, reading receipts, explaining, the margin, connecting and teaching. Paste a key from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, xAI, Mistral, DeepSeek, Groq, OpenRouter or the Vercel AI Gateway into Settings, or sign in with OpenRouter. It’s kept in your Mac’s Keychain, unless you choose Graphite’s own file in Settings, and sent only to that provider, with each request the Guide makes. Writing and linking work without one. How to get an AI API key for Graphite walks through getting one.
- Your notes
- On first run, Graphite makes a notebook at Documents/Graphite/My notebook, or opens any folder of markdown you point it at.
Works with Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok, Mistral, DeepSeek and more — paste a key, or sign in with OpenRouter. Graphite never charges for AI. You pay your provider for what you use, at their prices. The plan that's coming.
